Licence Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years old

  • Must hold a full Cat B (car) licence and a Provisional Cat C1 licence

Existing Entitlement

​

If you passed your car test before January 1st, 1997, you are granted the C1 licence entitlement automatically, which should be reflected on your current licence. With this inferred entitlement, you are not required to take a test for the C1 and can drive vehicle and trailer combinations up to 7.5 tonnes

Training Steps Category C1

Medical Examination:

Have your doctor complete the D4 form,

or we can recommend an alternative doctor.

Send Forms to DVLA:

Mail the D2 and D4 forms along with both parts of your existing licence to DVLA Swansea. There is no fee, and you should receive your new licence within 10-15 working days.

Pass the Theory Test:

This consists of two parts, which can be taken consecutively:

  • Part 1: 100 multiple choice questions (must answer at least 85 correctly).

  • Part 2: Hazard perception test with 19 film clips (must score at least 67 out of 100).

Obtain the Application Pack:

Get the D2 and D4 forms from the gov website.

Complete the Application:

Fill out the D2 Provisional Cat C1 application form.​.

Study for the Theory Test:

We can provide online access to theory study materials.

Practical Driver Training:

After passing the theory and hazard perception tests, you can begin practical driver training. Train to the DSA test standard and take the practical test.

Post-Test Entitlements

Passing the practical test allows you to drive rigid lorries up to 7.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750kg.

Ambulance Driver Training

To become an ambulance driver, pass the Category C1 (7.5 tonnes) driving tests and meet the minimum age requirements. Contact us for questions.

At Rollin Transport Training, choose from a small ambulance-like vehicle or a large van for the C1 course, spanning two to three consecutive days with the test on the third day.

​

Upon Passing

A C1 licence allows you to apply for ambulance service positions without needing the Driver CPC Initial certification.
